Am New York : Bringing All-American Glamour Back

This week, I shot the cover photo for my upcoming book — “I Can Make You Hot” — which St. Martin’s Press  is releasing in spring 2012.

For me, being “hot” is having confidence and taking leaps of faith without regret. For the St. Martin’s art director, Ervin Serrano, inspiration came from some photos taken by Seth Sabal, which evoke the new all-American girl: great hair, great smile, fresh feeling, and an easy and relaxed look.

All this book-cover image talk got me thinking about bringing the idea of the iconic all-American ’70s “Breck Girl” (of shampoo-commercial fame), back to the streets of New York in a modern way.

Some of my favorite pieces for reinventing the “Breck Girl”: H&M sequin styles, a fedora by Theory, Rogan’s Svelte Skinny Jeans, Prada oxford loafers, ’40s-inspired sapphire-blue silk blouses from Calypso St. Barth, and or red patent Repetto ballet flats (which my ex-husband got for me on his trip to Paris – so thoughtful!).

When wearing these styles, fashion lovers, make sure you always channel cool .

Hurricane Irene came and went, and so did my own hurricane of traveling — from Sag Harbor with two kids and three dogs, to Manhattan for a night, to Canyon Ranch in Lenox,Mass., and finally back to NYC this week.

That’s when I got a call: Hairstylist Julien Farel was once again having a salon at the U.S. Open. I definitely wanted to see Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer play tennis, but I also needed to meet the man who coifs their great-looking hair.

On the day I visited the Open, a car pulled up in front of my SoHo building to take me to Queens. Julien Farel himself — chicly dressed in a U.S. Open Polo shirt and equestrian-style pants — accompanied me on the ride. We chatted about the summer, his upcoming project (a secret wedding!) and, ofcourse, hair.

Farel, who has two salons in Manhattan, even gave me some tips for my dry hair, which oftengets blown out six times a week.

Another cool revelation: Farel said that even athletes are grooming- and beauty obsessed. I saw that for myself at the Open — everyone looked so good, on and off the court. Where was all the sweat, grime and grunting? I was impressed by all the neat short nails, cool haircuts and U.S. Open paraphernalia.

When I sat next to a player while getting my nails done at Farel’s salon, she had just finished working out in the gym, and she looked as though she had stepped right out of a Nike ad.

I, meanwhile, wore gold Prada shorts, J.Crew sandals,an easy top, a woven bag — which supports Wayuu Taya Charity — and Ray Ban sunglasses.

A few tips for hot Open attire: Sport a Lacoste or Polo shirt and a fun mini or hot shorts. Wear flats— it’s a sports match. Stay far away from fall colors and black — it’s too hot and you’ll fry like piece of bacon. Sport a cute Open baseball hat — guys like girls in baseball caps.

Keep your shoulders exposed but slather on the sunscreen. Channel a “hot athlete” — not a “fall fashion victim.”

Shorts make any pair of legs look great ! Two days in a row I was caught in the “SHORTS” act. Go for a run, shower with baby oil and get those legs out in the sun.

Happy summer, legs!

I am so flattered to be recognized so many different publications. Here are some out takes and final picture from the Supermodels Unlimited “Most Beautiful Edition” shoot that happened in November of 2009.
