Can bicycles be sexy? According to Brazilian born Lorenzo Martone, who spends his days and nights with the sexiest New Yorkers, the answer is “yes,” especially the Martone Bike.
What makes the Martone bicycle so special? Anyone can rent a Citi Bike, but for $899, you can head to Saks Fifth Avenue and purchase the most chic summer accessory, the Martone.
While sitting outside Café Select, Lorenzo Martone clued me into the steel behind the sexy.
I thought you owned a PR agency? I do work with supermodels like Alessandra Ambrosio and Irina Shayk, NARS and Brazilian Melissa Shoes. But I fell in love with the idea of making a chic mode of transportation. I lived in Paris for almost three years, so I’m used to the ease of taking a bike around the city. I moved to the West Village and my bike was in my living room, and it was so ugly. So I decided to create a line of bikes that are objects’ d’art or a sculpture and not just transportation. So, I started Martone Cycling Co.
It’s perfect timing with Citi Bike. It couldn’t have been better timing. I love the Citi Bikes, but I wanted something of my own. Bikes intimidate people, and this way, fitness can be a part of your life. The bike is beautiful and changes gears for you with a duomatic Kick Shift 2 speed hub with coaster brake, so a woman can wear a dress and heels and still bike.
Is it true that Karl Lagerfeld owns a bike, Oliver Theyskens of Theory photographed you, and even Kris Jenner hopped on one? Yes, it’s true. I’m excited that my friends love this bike, for it’s an amazing accessory and sustainable. I cycle everywhere.
Where are they sold? They are sold online and come 80% assembled. They are sold at Saks Fifth Avenue and online at Martone Cycling . They come in red, black, white, gold and silver.
Where do you like to eat? I love the West Village — Café Cluny, Omen, Standard Grill, San Ambroeus and Monkey Bar uptown.
Who are your favorite men’s designers? I love Dior Homme, Jil Sander, Marc Jacobs, Uniqlo for T-shirts, Jeffreys, Saks men’s department and Alejandro Ingelmo for sneakers.
Any advice? Be creative and open to everything around.
