U.S. Open – Tennis

At the end of every summer comes the U.S. Open sponsored by Mercedes Benz. It is filled with celebs, fashion peeps, press and tennis fanatics. The girls love to watch the tennis, eat all of the goodies in the Heineken suite. I just love to watch the athleticism and drink good beer. Is that too honest?

Paper Magazine – Gold Bar

Paper Magazine asked me to be a guest blogger for fashion week. Maybe its my real approach to fashion that they like. I honestly have no idea why they asked me, but I am incredibly flattered and obsessed with Paper Magazine. Its cool, sexy, urban, and not fashion fake. They like what they like because its good. I have always thought of Paper Magazine as a leaders in the trend driven mags. And, now I am a guest blogger. I also had a celebratory party at Gold Bar for fashion week and for my new fashion week blog. Who came? All my tv friends. I guess everyone loves the world they don’t know. Fashion is obsessed with being on tv, and tv peeps are obsessed with the allure of tv. So, I guess taking a leap of faith into tv land was a good thing.

Here comes my blog!

Gap

I was invited to go to a few fashion shows at the Mercedes Benz Fashion week at the new location at Lincoln Center. I have always been intrigued by fashion, but I also love the European aesthetic of mixing it up with expensive luxury items and great items from the Gap. Yes, I am Gap obsessed lately. Its everything I love, tight hot jeans and easy menswear inspired that give you a look that says you’ve traveled somewhere amazing. From black magic skinny trousers to cropped jeans, Gap fits all types of women. They even have cool wax canvas bags that are so cool and durable, and their metallic ballet flats are straight off a ballerina.

Good taste doesn’t have to have a high ticket price.

Toms School Shoes

The first day of school is a big day for everyone. With folders, new pencils, new haircuts, its a time to refresh and prepare for the new school year. Why not give back, too? My girls wanted Toms shoes as their school shoes. Comfy, easy, and black. Toms are a great alternative to sneakers. And, every pair of shoes you buy, another child in need gets a pair.

Welcome back to school.

Minnie Mortimer

Three summers ago, I met a really cute couple on a beach. She was young, brunette, and he was cool and artsy looking. A little baby was running circles around them. A week later, her brother called me and mentioned I had met his sister and two mini Minnie Mortimer dresses arrived at my house. Short, striped, and smokin hot. They reminded me of a dress you’d see on Bridget Bardot in the 60s. Who doesn’t want to look like Bridget Bardot? In one of Minnie’s dresses you imagine yourself like Bridget who surfs, rides bikes, has kids, and goes everywhere from the beach with her friends to the playground with her kids. Her men’s inspired shirts are hot sexy, fitted, and easy.

Congratulations Minnie to your  presentation at 1OAK. Your clothes are just want every woman  wants, along with a trainer of course.

Rum Is The New Scotch

I was invited by Appleton Rum to be one of their judges of the Appleton Estate Reserve Bartender’s Challenge. New York City is known for its fantastic nightlife and I’m always excited to try the latest cocktails. The bartender’s challenge is a fun idea Appleton developed to celebrate cocktail making. These are some of the country’s most talented mixologists and I can’t wait to see the new recipes they come up with!   Appleton is the rum that needs nothing. It makes a Dark and Stormy smokin’ delicious. And all those delicious Tiki drinks are made with rum.

One of my favorite Bahamian drinks that you can only get in Nassau is a “Rumdum.’ Delicious and deadly. So, why skimp. Make all your cocktails with the best alcohol your bartender has.  For 260 years, Appleton Estate has been perfecting the art of rum making – since 1749. Appleton Estate rums are estate distilled and estate produced — Jamaican Rum.   Appleton Estate rums are small batch copper pot distillation.  Appleton Estate rums are masterfully blended.   Appleton Estate rums are hand-crafted, premium blended and aged in the finest quality oak     so you are probably think? So, what? Well, I got the chance to meet the hottest and most talented bartenders the USA has to offer and drink all sorts of delicious Rum drinks. Here’s what happened.  Participants were challenged to create an original Appleton Estate Reserve cocktail with a harmony of ingredients inspired by their favorite published song.  Each Appleton Estate Reserve cocktail was judged not only on taste and originality but,  presentation, creativity and inspiration from song to cocktail.

The regional challenges took place in four U.S. Markets: New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Miami.  With the successful completion of the Regional Remixology Bartender Challenges, Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum is pleased to host the finals of the Appleton Estate ReserveRemixologyBartender Challenge in New York City on August 31st. Finalists from each market are competing in New York with aspirations to be crowned champion. Judges, Willy Shine , Aisha Sharpe, Contemporary Cocktails, Andy Seymour, founder of Liquid Production, Dushan Zaric , owner Chef of Macao Trading Co., along with guest judge, me, Kelly Killoren Bensimon of  The Real Housewives of New York City. The judges will  decide which challenger will win a trip to Jamaica, October 20th – 26th, to represent the United States in the Bartenders Challenge Global Showcase . Appleton Estate Reserve is to be mixed into different drinks. They are timed, judged by creativity, originality, and tested on rum knowledge.

The winner was Brian Miller,  who lured me with his sarong, great bartending skills, knowledge of rum history, rum drinks,  and his hilarious tiki dancers that tookt the bar out of New York City and into the Caribbean.

Thank you Appleton for teaching me about tasting Notes:

-Delicate scents of brown sugar, honey and holiday spice with orange peel and vanilla highlights

-Palate:  Sweet, honeyed and satiny, melded tastes of marzipan, caramel and brown sugar with a long, tangy and biscuit finish

And, thank you Appleton Rum for having me as a judge. Macao is an awesome restaurant, and I am definitely going back for drinks.

Cheers!!!

At the Hampton Classic this year, I had a great time. I got 4 in the 2′6 Adult Equitation, and then got dumped in the 3 foot adult amateur division. I got the pleasure of riding Rush Chairman Bill who saved me from a bad distance. I am so fortunate to be able to lease such a beautiful horse and experience riding him and then go into the Hampton Classic with him. Most of the riders have been riding all their lives. It’s a fun hobby for me and I don’t take it for granted. I was really disappointed in myself and the fact that I pushed a horse to a distance that wasn’t there. The sport has taught me humility, shown me incredible athleticism, and shown me the power of commitment. Congratulations to all the riders. I learned a really important lesson: try and try again. Compete with yourself, and have a blast.  There is no dress rehearsal.

Thank you Hampton Classic.
